IOF Olof Johnell Science Award presented to Professor Serge Ferrari

The award recognizes an individual who has made outstanding global contributions to the field of osteoporosis in a scientific or policy implementation area

Professor Serge Ferrari, Associate Professor of Medicine and Senior Consultant in Metabolic bone diseases at the Geneva University Hospital has been named winner of the International Osteoporosis Foundation's 2016 Olof Johnell Science Award, presented during the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases.

The Olof Johnell Science Award, named in honour of the late Professor Olof Johnell, is awarded annually to an individual who has contributed to the field of osteoporosis in a scientific or policy implementation area, worldwide.

Professor Bess Dawson-Hughes, IOF Board member and Professor of Medicine at Tufts University presented the Award in Malaga. She stated, "Serge Ferrari is a clear thought leader within the field of bone health, known for his work in the areas of bone growth, genetics of osteoporosis and bone remodeling. The focus of his outstanding research is on the translation of new findings on the biological and pharmacological mechanisms of action on bone into improved patient care in osteoporosis and metabolic bone disorders."

Serge Ferrari is Full Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva, Switzerland. He is also Head of the Clinical Service and Research Laboratory of Bone Diseases at the Department of Internal Medicine Specialties, Geneva University Hospital. Professor Ferrari obtained his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva in 1989. He trained in internal medicine and pathophysiology at Geneva University Hospital, and subsequently as a research and clinical fellow in bone diseases and endocrinology at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, USA. Professor Ferrari was the nominated Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston, in 2000 and was also the recipient of a Professorship grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation in 2001. He is Vice-chair of the Committee of Scientific Advisors of the International Osteoporosis Foundation, past President of the Swiss Bone and Mineral Society, and current Vice-president of the Swiss Association against Osteoporosis. He is Editor-in-Chief of BoneKEy Reports (Nature publishing group) from the International Bone and Mineral Society, and a member of the editorial board of several scientific journals including Osteoporosis International and Bone. Professor Ferrari has published over 200 articles and book chapters in the field of osteoporosis and bone and mineral metabolism.
