Groundbreaking journal, Gender and the Genome, to launch in summer 2016

Peer-Reviewed Publication

Mary Ann Liebert, Inc./Genetic Engineering News

New Rochelle, NY, January 27, 2016--The announcement in 2000 that the structure of the human genome had been successfully described signaled a dramatic change in our ability to explore, augment, and alter the nature of life. Gender and the Genome, a new peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers, will explore how the new science of the 21st century is profoundly influenced by biological sex. The Founding Editor of this provocative new journal is Marianne J. Legato, MD, FACP, Emerita Professor of Clinical Medicine, Columbia University; Adjunct Professor of Medicine, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; and Founder, Foundation for Gender-Specific Medicine. The Journal will be published in print and online, with open access options.

Gender and the Genome will publish evidence-based original research, reviews, perspectives, and commentaries that will illuminate the impact of biological sex on 21st century technology and its effect on human life. The international editorial board will include the most forward-thinking leaders in gender-specific medicine to engage the community of molecular biologists, engineers, ethicists, anthropologists, and legal experts engaged in a dialogue about the nature and implications of 21st century technology.

Members of the editorial board in formation include Aaron Ciechanover, MD, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa; Terri L. Cornelison, MD, PhD, Office of Research on Women's Health, NIH; Dov Feldberg, MD, Sackler Medical School, Tel Aviv University; Marek Glezerman, MD, Sackler Medical School, Tel Aviv University; Marjorie Jenkins, MD, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Amarillo; Alyson J. McGregor, MD, Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Providence, RI; Virginia M. Miller, PhD, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN; Vivian W. Pinn, MD, Senior Scientist Emerita, Fogerty International Center, NIH, and Former Director (Retired), Office of Research on Women's Health, NIH; Jane F. Reckelhoff, PhD, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson; Vera Regitz-Zagrosek, MD, PhD, Charité -Universitätsmedizin Berlin; and Myron L. Weisfeldt, MD, Johns Hopkins University; among others.

Topics in Gender and the Genome will include sex-specific differences in genomic, cellular, tissue, and whole animal function; new life forms generated by synthetic biology; technological advances meant to enhance the function in humans, whether compromised by disease/injury or in normal individuals; manufacture and usefulness of robotic devices; and commentaries by ethicists, theologians, anthropologists, epidemiologists, and sociologists/social scientists on the achievements of 21st century science to alter the genome, create new life forms, and develop technologically enhanced humans.

Gender and the Genome will build a central forum and repository for rigorously peer-reviewed papers, as more high-quality research is needed to move the field forward.

"Our aim is to make this journal one of the most original and exciting in science," says Dr. Legato. "Its concentration on radically new technology, commentary on the ethical and legal aspects of the scientific community's activities, and consideration of the most effective ways to translate the achievements of molecular biologists and engineers into the improvement and prolongation of human life, all in the context of biological sex, is unique."

"As researchers continue to unravel the human molecular ancestral program, genetic discoveries concerning population variations such as disease and behavior will need to be seen in light of biological sex," says Mary Ann Liebert, Founder, President, and CEO of the company that bears her name. "This is the future."

Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers is a privately held, fully integrated media company known for establishing authoritative peer-reviewed journals in many promising areas of science and biomedical research, including DNA and Cell Biology, Human Gene Therapy, Nucleic Acid Therapeutics, and Cellular Reprogramming. Its biotechnology trade magazine, GEN (Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News), was the first in its field and is today the industry's most widely read publication worldwide. A complete list of the firm's 80 journals, books, and newsmagazines is available on the Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers website.

About the Foundation for Gender-Specific Medicine

The Foundation for Gender Specific-Medicine supports the investigation of the ways in which biological sex and gender affect normal human function and the experience of disease. One of the discipline's pioneers, Marianne J. Legato, MD, FACP established the Foundation as a continuation of her work with The Partnership for Gender-Specific Medicine at Columbia University.
