CHICAGO, Jan. 8, 2016 - The American Epilepsy Society (AES) has been awarded accreditation with commendation as a provider of continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. To earn this accreditation, AES was resurveyed by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and demonstrated compliance in all accreditation criteria, standards and policies, earning accreditation with commendation from the ACCME through Nov. 30, 2021.

"One of AES's primary goals is to provide exceptional clinical and non-clinical continuing medical education to all levels of epilepsy professionals," said Eileen Murray, AES executive director. "Earning full accreditation with commendation is an affirmation of our efforts and enables us to fulfill our mission -- to advance the understanding of epilepsy and to promote the highest levels of care."

ACCME accreditation seeks to assure the medical community and the public that AES provides physicians with relevant, independent, effective, practice-based continuing medical education that that supports U.S. health-care quality improvement.

The ACCME employs a rigorous, multilevel process for evaluating institutions' CME programs according to the high accreditation standards adopted by all seven ACCME member organizations. These organizations of medicine in the U.S. are the American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Hospital Association, the American Medical Association, the Association for Hospital Medical Education, the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Council of Medical Specialty Societies, and the Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States, Inc.

"Achieving commendation is extremely gratifying," said Debra Gist, AES director of education. "AES strives to continually improve the quality of its CME programs and processes to meet the rapidly changing needs for our broad community of learners. This recognition is a testament to the work of many volunteers and our staff. It is a great honor."
