Surgical Case Reports is now being published by SpringerOpen and it will soon be joined by JA Clinical Reports and IPSJ Transactions on Computer Vision and Applications. The addition of these journals to the portfolio adds to the growing number of Japanese society open access journals published by SpringerOpen in fields such as clinical medicine, life sciences and computer science.

Surgical Case Reports is an official journal of the Japan Surgical Society. Hideo Baba from Kumamoto University, Japan, acts as Editor-in-Chief for the journal. Surgical Case Reports aims to contribute to the progress of surgery by providing clinicians and researchers with an educational forum in which to disseminate their personal experiences and novel treatments to a wide readership. This will be done through the publication of interesting and rare cases encountered by colleagues all over the world.

JA Clinical Reports will begin publication later in 2015 and will be led by Michiaki Yamakage, Sapporo, Japan. It will act as a sister journal to the successful Journal of Anesthesia also published by Springer. Both journals will be affiliated with the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists. JA Clinical Reports will focus on publishing case reports which remain an important aspect of the medical literature, and are needed for education and the cultivation of knowledge in the field of anesthesia.

These two journals add to the growing number of Japanese society open access journals published by SpringerOpen, and will soon be joined by the computer science journal IPSJ Transactions on Computer Vision and Applications to be published in partnership with the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ). The journal will be led by Yasushi Yagi from Osaka University. IPSJ hopes to strengthen the journal's international presence by publishing with SpringerOpen.

BioMed Central also adds to the number of Japanese society journals with the following being published this year: Journal of Pharmaceutical Health Care and Sciences (Japanese Society of Pharmaceutical Health Care and Sciences), Zoological Letters (Zoological Society of Japan), Genes and Environment (Japanese Environmental Mutagen Society) and Renal Replacement Therapy (Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy).

Koji Yamashita, President and Managing Director, Springer, Japan, said: "As the market leader for society journal publishing in Japan, we are very proud to be increasing the number of open access journal publishing collaborations we have with prestigious societies. These open access partnerships ensure wider dissemination and exposure of research results to the global research community. We look forward to supporting the success of these journals."
