IOF President's Award presented to osteoporosis experts from 7 regions of the world

International Osteoporosis Foundation honors members' exceptional commitment to advancing health professional education and the promotion of osteoporosis prevention and treatment in their communities

In a special presentation on March 27, 2015 at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases, the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) recognized the outstanding contributions of seven individuals from different regions of the world.

The IOF President's Award is presented to IOF members who have shown noteworthy and long-term dedication to the work of IOF and to the advancement of osteoporosis awareness and education worldwide.

The winners, selected from each of seven geographical regions, are:

ASIA-PACIFIC - Professor Liu Zhonghou, President and CNS representative of the Osteoporosis Committee of China Gerontological Society, Honorary Treasurer and Board member of the Asia Pacific Osteoporosis Foundation, Editor-in-chief of the Chinese Journal of Osteoporosis.

EASTERN EUROPE - Professor Edward Czerwinski, Head Bone and Joint Diseases Department, Medical College of the Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland, CNS representative of the Polish Osteoarthrology Society.

SOUTHERN EUROPE - Professor Sansin Tüzün, Istanbul University, Cerrahpasa School of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, CNS representative of the Osteoporosis Patient Society of Turkey.

WESTERN EUROPE - Professor Marius Kraenzlin, Consultant of Calcium and Bone Metabolism, Clinic for Endocrinology, Diabetology and Metabolism, University of Basel, Past CNS representative Swiss Society against Osteoporosis, Member the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors, Member IOF CSA Bone & Diabetes Working Group.

MIDDLE EAST & AFRICA - Dr Gemma Adib, Founder and President of the Syrian National Osteoporosis Society (SYNOS); past President and former General Secretary of the Pan Arab Osteoporosis Society (PAOS); Board Member of IOF representing the Middle East and Africa region and Chair of the IOF Middle East & Africa Regional Advisory Council (RAC).

LATIN AMERICA - Dr Cristiano Zerbini, Founding Director Centro Paulista de Investigação Clinica (CEPIC), Member IOF Board of Governance, CNS representative of the Brazilian Society of Osteoporosis (SOBRAO); Member of the IOF Board, Latin American Regional Advisory Committee, and Chair of the Inflammation and Bone Architecture Working Group.

NORTH AMERICA - Dr Mike McClung, Founding Director Oregon Osteoporosis Center, Founding Director Oregon Osteoporosis Center, Member IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors, Member of Menopausal Hormone Therapy and Bone Markers IOF Working Groups.

IOF President Professor John A. Kanis stated, "We are honoured to recognize the outstanding contributions of these IOF members, who are all leading osteoporosis experts in their countries and regions. This Award recognizes their efforts as educators and advocates for fracture prevention and improved osteoporosis patient care. Thanks to their work, public awareness and health professional knowledge of osteoporosis has grown immensely over the past decade in all regions of the world."

About the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis & Musculoskeletal Diseases:
