Douglas Institute researcher among new members of the Order of Canada

Montréal, January 5, 2015 -Dr. Serge Gauthier, M.D., FRCPC, an eminent researcher in Alzheimer's disease, has been appointed to the Order of Canada by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada.

According to the Governor General's press release, Dr. Gauthier was awarded this honour for his contributions to advancing our understanding of Alzheimer's disease and dementia, and for fostering the development of research networks in his specialty.

Indeed, Dr. Gauthier is credited with setting up the first multicentre Canadian study of tacrine as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease. He also founded the Consortium of Canadian Centres for Clinical Cognitive Research (C5R).

Based at the Douglas Institute, Dr. Gauthier is director of the Alzheimer's Disease Research Unit at the McGill Centre for Studies in Aging. In addition to authoring numerous research papers, journal articles, and book chapters, he edited an internationally cited textbook with 50 percent Canadian authorship titled Clinical Diagnosis and Management of Alzheimer's Disease. With Dr. Judes Poirier, he also co-authored a book for the general public titled La maladie d'Alzheimer : Le guide.

Dr. Gauthier is one of eleven outstanding individuals associated with McGill University who were appointed to the Order of Canada last Friday. He is thus in the company of a former dean of the Faculty of Medicine, a former director of the School of Nursing, and a renowned economics professor emeritus. In all, ninety-five new Order of Canada appointments were made by David Johnston, Governor General and former McGill Principal.
