Smoke Wafts Over the Selway Valley in Idaho

image: Smoke from the fires in the Selway Complex is wafting into the Selway River valley in this image taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite on Sept. 15, 2014. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS's thermal bands, are outlined in red. All the fires began between Aug.t 10 and Aug. 25, 2014 by lightning strikes. The following fires are part of the Selway Complex: Raven Creek, Elevator Mountain, Eagle Creek, Vance Mountain, Nick Wynn, and Jerusalem fires. The Johnson Bar fire is also contributing to the smoke in the valley. This fire began with a lightning strike on Aug. 03, 2014. It is currently just over 9,600 acres in size and is 55 percent contained at this time. Smoke still spews from the Johnson Bar fire and is co-mingling with the smoke from the Selway Complex and settling into the Selway River valley in this Terra satellite image. view more
