Montreal, October 24, 2013 – Continuing a more than 25-year tradition, the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), together with the Foundations of the MUHC, hosted the annual Research Awards Dinner on October 23 to distribute more than $3 million to some of the hospital's most promising clinician-researchers.
The awards, which ranged from $10,000 to $75,000, are a collaboration between the RI-MUHC, the Montreal General Hospital Foundation, the Royal Victoria Hospital Foundation, the Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation and the Cedars Cancer Institute.
More than 80 clinician-researchers representing a variety of disciplines were recognized during the evening. All of whom have demonstrated exceptional promise in the work they are undertaking.
Dr. Jonathan Spicer, a thoracic surgeon at the Montreal General Hospital, was among the recipients and received the Bell Media Fellowship.
"This award will allow me to pursue laboratory research and also build a strong multi-disciplinary team that will work on developing innovative surgical techniques for treating lung cancer," he said. "It's truly gratifying to see the level of support that exists in the community. I think I can speak for all of the recipients tonight by saying this gives us added motivation to accomplish great things for the patients we care for."
The recipients are selected by the Scientific Awards Committee, comprised of hospital chiefs and chaired by Dr. Joseph Shuster, Director of Adult Allergy & Immunology at the MUHC. Each award has unique criteria established by the Foundations, the Awards Committee and the benefactors.

"We have been proud supporters of nurses for the past 12 years and it was a privilege for me to attend the Research Awards Dinner and get to know some of the very talented up-and-coming stars in this field and others," Ingram said. "The energy in the room exuded passion and a genuine desire to advance knowledge and push the boundaries to improve patient care at every level – from the clinics to the Emergency Department to the laboratory. I was grateful to be able to support such a worthy initiative."
