The first is the International Association for Dental Research Lion Dental Research Award for microbiology/immunology. Only three such awards are given internationally each year and they are intended to support improvements in oral health services by junior researchers.

The award recognises Svetislav's outstanding and innovative research in basic dental science for the improvement of public dental health. It also recognises applied research achievements for the improvement and development if oral care products for the prevention of oral diseases.

The second accolade is the Oral and Dental Research Trust Award sponsored by GSK. The Oral and Dental Research Trust is the only dental research charity and this year awarded only five grants. Svetislav achieved his award to support his research entitled: "Subgingival plaque lipid-A profile as a bacterially-derived biomarker for chronic periodontitis".

Professor Christopher Tredwin, Head of the Peninsula School of Dentistry at Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, commented: "We are extremely proud of Sveta's achievements and we offer him our sincerest congratulations. His work, together with those of his colleagues, is contributing to dental research which is having and will have a huge positive impact on dental health around the world."
