Digital Scholarly Editions Initial Training Network (DiXiT), a research network funded by the European Commission, has been initiated at the University of Cologne. Together with 26 international prominent partners from the academia and business sector, DiXiT is part of an international network being coordinated at the University of Cologne under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Andreas Speer, Director of the Thomas Institute and speaker of the Cologne Center for eHumanities (CCeH). Through the targeted funding and employment of young academics, DiXiT wants to promote the development of standards and sustainability in the area of digital humanities. The main focus thereby will be on the domain of digital editions.

The research network, which has received funding of four million Euros as a Marie-Curie Programme from the European Commission, is a response to the growing worldwide significance of digital humanities. It was against this backdrop that the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne set up the Cologne Center for eHumanities (CCeH) a few years ago. DiXiT has now made it a priority to meet the dynamic and often diverse developments of the digital possibilities head on. Through a structured program for young academics, which comprises a network of 10 European universities and 16 further associated partners (such as open knowledge foundations and software providers), DiXiT wants to create sustainable digital structures and thereby contribute to the independence of academia from the commercial sector. The objective here is to expand and participate in the creation of the domain of digital edition using innovative research work with regard to both theory and method. The different projects that are being initiated within the framework of DiXiT are offering thereby many approaches that incorporate methods from both the humanities and information science in order to connect the two domains in a useful and significant manner.
