Los Angeles, CA (July 31, 2013) SAGE and the Society for Teaching of Psychology (STP) are pleased to announce that Dr. Shannon R. Audley-Piotrowski, Professor of Education and Child Development at Smith College and Carly Smith, Clinical Doctoral Student at the University of Oregon, are the winners of the 2013 Teaching Innovations & Professional Development Award. Given out annually, this award is designed to defray costs for one early-career faculty member and one graduate student attending the STP program at the American Psychological Association Convention.

"I am incredibly honored to receive the support of SAGE and the Society for the Teaching of Psychology," stated Smith. "This generous travel grant makes my first trip to APA affordable. I so look forward to sharing ideas with the current and future leaders in psychology."

SAGE will honor both award recipients at a reception held in the SAGE Booth # 911/913 on Friday August 2nd, from 11am-2pm at the APA Conference in Hawaii.

"SAGE is delighted to support an award that will provide two young teaching professionals with the opportunity to present on their own research developments and learn about new directions in psychology from their colleagues," said Michele Sordi, Vice President, SAGE Editorial. "This year's award recipients have exhibited a passionate dedication to scholarship and to teaching and learning. We congratulate both of them and hope that this experience will be an enriching moment in their professional development."

Carly Smith is a clinical psychology graduate student and graduate teaching fellow at University of Oregon who has taught classes in psychology of Trauma, Personality Psych, and Statistical Methods. She has participated in numerous programs to develop her teaching expertise including a Practicum in College Teaching, a semester-long class on course design and instructional skills.

Shannon Audley-Piotrowski just finished her first year of full time teaching at Smith College where she teaches applied psychology and interdisciplinary courses focused on child development. She attended and presented at APA and will be co-chairing and presenting in a symposium that examines how open-source materials influence classroom pedagogy. She received her PhD from the University of Memphis in educational psychology in 2012 and has several recent publications in the area of adolescent social development.

"I feel that my participation in APA will allow me to participate in conversations about skills that are necessary for psychology majors and will allow me, as a junior faculty member, to meet future collaborators and to form beneficial collaborative research projects," Audley-Piotrowski stated. "Additionally, attending APA will help me refine my ideas for publication on the teaching of psychology, which is a combination of what I hold very dear- psychology and education."

A division of APA, the Society for the Teaching of Psychology is dedicated to advancing the understanding of teaching and learning in the discipline, advocating for the needs of professing psychologists, and communicating the value of the teaching profession externally.

"I have been honored to be part of the STP committee charged with reviewing applications for this award," stated Lori Rosenthal, chair of the award selection committee and Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Social Sciences at Lasell College. "Each year, we receive many applications from rising professionals in the field and it is wonderful to see their thirst for knowledge about recent developments in psychology education and their desire to learn about empirically-validated teaching and learning. Their commitment to developing classroom skills and sharing expertise is inspiring. I can confidently speak for all of my fellow committee members (Diana Gonzalez, Jennell Holstead, Jessica Hartnett, and Brent Moore) when I say that we have been truly impressed with the dedication to the art and scholarship of teaching evident among these early career psychologists."
