Stanley Osher of University of California, Los Angeles, is awarded the 2013 John von Neumann Lecture in recognition of his extraordinarily influential and wide-ranging contributions to the computational sciences and engineering.

Dr. Osher will receive his award and present the associated prize lecture at the SIAM Annual Meeting to be held July 8-12 at the Town and Country Resort & Convention Center in San Diego, California.

Established in 1959 in honor of the Hungarian-American mathematician of the same name, SIAM's flagship lecture, The John von Neumann Lecture, rewards outstanding contributions to the field of applied mathematical sciences and their effective communication to the community.

A professor of mathematics and electrical engineering at UCLA, Dr. Osher has been a leader in developing mathematics and algorithms including essentially non-oscillatory methods for hyperbolic conservation laws, level set methods for front tracking, and l1 and TVD methods for image processing, tomography, and optimization. His algorithms are used by scientists and engineers the world over.

His research work involves the development of innovative numerical methods to solve partial differential equations, analysis of these algorithms and the underlying PDEs, as well as applications to various areas of engineering, physics and image processing.

His work has received numerous awards and recognitions, including SIAM's Ralph E. Kleinman Prize in 2005 and the 2003 ICIAM Pioneer Prize.

The John von Neumann Lecturer receives an honorarium of $5,000 and a framed, hand-calligraphed certificate.

Dr. Osher will receive his award at the Prizes and Awards Luncheon at the Golden Ballroom on Tuesday, July 9, and deliver the lecture, titled "What Sparsity and l1 Optimization Can Do For You" immediately following the luncheon in the Town & Country room.

About SIAM

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is an international society of over 14,000 individual members, including applied and computational mathematicians and computer scientists, as well as other scientists and engineers. Members from 85 countries are researchers, educators, students, and practitioners in industry, government, laboratories, and academia. The Society, which also includes nearly 500 academic and corporate institutional members, serves and advances the disciplines of applied mathematics and computational science by publishing a variety of books and prestigious peer-reviewed research journals, by conducting conferences, and by hosting activity groups in various areas of mathematics. SIAM provides many opportunities for students including regional sections and student chapters. Further information is available at http://www.siam.org.
