LOS ANGELES (Jan. 2, 2013) – Recognized as a pioneer in the field of emergency medical services (EMS) over the past two decades, Marianne Gausche-Hill, M.D., lead investigator at The Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed), was honored by the Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) with a Distinguished Service Award for her contributions and sustained statewide leadership, research and education in improving EMS for children. Dr. Gausche-Hill was presented with the award at a ceremony held on Dec. 5, 2012 in San Francisco.

Established in 2007, the annual EMSA awards honor and recognize exceptional acts and service by individuals who work or volunteer in California's emergency medical system. Dr. Gausche-Hill was one of 39 individuals to receive the award.

"We congratulate Dr. Gausche-Hill on this well-deserved honor," said David Meyer, Ph.D., president and CEO of LA BioMed. "Dr. Gausche-Hill has been a leader in pediatric EMS for more than 20 years, and her research has helped shape the way health care facilities and agencies at the local, state and federal levels respond to and care for children during emergencies."

Nationally known for her work as an EMS researcher and educator, Dr. Gausche-Hill helped establish the first EMS system in the United States for children over 20 years ago. Since then, she has published important research that has set the standard for pediatric airway management in the pre-hospital setting, and has served as editor for APLS: The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Resource, as well as seven other textbooks in emergency medicine and pre-hospital care.

Earlier this year, Dr. Gausche-Hill teamed up with fellow LA BioMed lead investigator and pediatric emergency medicine specialist, Dr. Kate Remick, to deploy a statewide, web-based survey designed to help assess the pediatric emergency readiness of hospital emergency departments (EDs). As the first statewide survey of its kind, this project represents an enormous quality improvement initiative that will help hospital EDs optimize the emergency care they provide to children of all ages, from neonates to adolescents.

In addition to the EMSA Distinguished Service Award, Dr. Gausche-Hill has been recognized by several organizations, including the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) National Education Award in Emergency Medicine; the Martha Bushore-Fallis APLS award from the American Academy of Pediatrics; and the Emergency Medical Services for Children Heroes Award for Lifetime Achievement. In 2008, she was named one of the Heroes of Emergency Medicine by the ACEP, and was a finalist in 2010 for the Daily Breeze Healthcare Provider of the Year.
