American Society of Agronomy announces 2012 award recipients

Awards will be presented at the Annual Meetings in Cincinnati in October

MADISON, WI - Aug. 29, 2012 – The American Society of Agronomy (ASA) announces the following 2012 awards that will be formally presented during their Annual Meetings, Oct. 21-24, 2012 in Cincinnati, OH.

Jerome H. Cherney, Cornell University - Agronomic Extension Education Award: Jerry Cherney is E.V. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Crop and Soil Science Department at Cornell University. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Wisconsin, and Ph.D. degree from the University of Minnesota.

Thomas A. Doerge, Deere & Company - Agronomic Industry Award: Dr. Tom Doerge has been "Living the Agronomy Dream" for the past 35 years. Following study in geography and soil science, he was employed at the Univ. of Arizona, Pioneer Hi-Bred Int'l. and now at John Deere, where he is Corporate Life Scientist.

David A. Zuberer, Texas A&M University - Agronomic Resident Education Award: David Zuberer is a Senior Professor of Soil Microbiology in the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences at Texas A&M University. He received B.A. and M.S. degrees from West Virginia University and his Ph.D. degree from the University of South Florida.

Darrell L. Hanavan, Colorado State University - ASA Honorary Membership: Darrell L. Hanavan is Executive Director of the Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee, Colorado Association of Wheat Growers and Colorado Wheat Research Foundation. He received his B.A. from the UNCO and his M.A. from the University of Denver.

Mike Wilson, Wabash Valley Service Company - International Certified Crop Adviser of the Year Award: Mike Wilson is a CCA with Wabash Valley Service Company in Allendale, IL. He has been a CCA for 17 years and is a tireless community volunteer and a trusted agriculture expert in Southern Illinois.

Robert M. Stupar, University of Minnesota - ASA Early Career Professional Award: Robert Stupar is an Assistant Professor in the department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics at the University of Minnesota. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Minnesota and Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin.

Liwang Ma, USDA-ARS Fort Collins, CO - Environmental Quality Research Award: Liwang Ma is a Soil Scientist with USDA-ARS, Agricultural systems Research Unit in Fort Collins, CO. He earned his B. S. and M. S. degrees from China Agricultural University and his Ph.D. degree from Louisiana State University.

Roland J. Buresh, International Rice Research Institute - International Service in Agronomy Award: Roland Buresh is a soil scientist at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines. He received an M.S. degree from North Dakota State University and a Ph.D. degree from Louisiana State University.

Robert Horton, Iowa State University-Kingenta Agricultural Science Award: Robert Horton is a Distinguished Professor of Soil Science in the Agronomy Department at Iowa State University. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Texas A&M University, and a Ph.D. degree from New Mexico State University.

Guihua Bai, USDA-ARS - Tengtou Agricultural Science Award: Guihua Bai is a Research Molecular Geneticist in USDA and Professor in the Agronomy Department at Kansas State University. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Nanjing Agricultural University in China, and Ph.D. degree from Purdue University.

John L. Havlin, Kansas State University - Werner L. Nelson Award for Diagnosis of Yield-Limiting Factor: John Havlin is Professor, Soil Science and Director of Distance Education in the College of Agriculture at NC State University. The award is based on his development of software and other tools to enhance agricultural productivity and profitability.
