Internationality still important in research training groups program

Grants committee decides on new establishment and extensions

Grant and Award Announcement

This release is available in German.

To further strengthen early career support for researchers in Germany, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) has approved the establishment of a new Research Training Group. This was decided by the responsible Grants Committee at its meeting on 11 May 2012 in Bonn. The new Research Training Group will offer doctoral researchers the opportunity to earn their degrees in a structured research and qualification programme at a high scientific level.

The newly established Research Training Group is an International Research Training Group, which will collaborate closely with the Dutch universities of Leiden and Amsterdam. Its international orientation increases the appeal of a doctorate obtained in a Research Training Group. An additional bonus is interdisciplinarity, which encourages cross-border cooperation with universities and other institutions. The variety in the forms and paths of cooperation also contributes to the structural development of the doctoral programme.

In its first 4.5-year period, the new doctoral programme will receive a total of approximately 1.8 million euros in DFG funding (including a programme allowance for indirect project costs). In addition to establishing the International Research Training Group, the Grants Committee also approved the extension of seven existing Research Training Groups. The DFG currently funds 214 Research Training Groups, including 47 international ones.

The profile of the new International Research Training Group:

To combine and interconnect the extensive expertise in arithmetic algebraic geometry and complex geometry is the goal of International Research Training Group 1800 "Moduli and Automorphic Forms: Arithmetic and Geometric Aspects". Its early-career researchers are especially interested in examining the interplay between the arithmetic and the geometry of moduli spaces as well as problems in the theory of automorphic forms. The research programme encompasses the research areas of arithmetic moduli, heights and densities, degenerations, and automorphic forms, which are mutually interconnected.
