PHILADELPHIA (April 12, 2012) – The American Academy of Political and Social Science (AAPSS) announced that Paul Volcker will be the recipient of the 2012 Daniel Patrick Moynihan Prize, recognizing him for his use of evidence and social research in advancing the public good. The Moynihan Prize is awarded annually to an individual whose career demonstrates the value of informed judgment and the use social research in shaping public policy.

This year's celebratory dinner will held on May 10, 2012 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington D.C.

Volcker, a former Chairman of Federal Reserve, was tapped by President Obama in 2009 to lead his Economic Recovery Advisory Board, a newly established White House committee. Among his contributions in that capacity, Volcker advocated for increased regulation of the U.S. banking industry, which led to the inclusion of the so-called Volcker Rule in the Dodd-Frank legislation, restricting U.S. banks from making speculative investments that don't benefit their customers. This Rule is scheduled to go into effect with the Dodd-Frank law in 2012.

Volcker drew on social science extensively as Chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1979 to 1987 and in various leadership positions inside and outside of government. "Paul Volcker offers a strong political voice for the good of the people in this economy," said Douglas S. Massey, President of the American Academy of Political and Social Science. "Because of this and his many efforts throughout his career to bring social science research to bear on public policy, he embodies the spirit of the Moynihan Prize."

The award furthers the mission of the American Academy of Political and Social Science who advance the use of social science in policy through many efforts including the publishing of their journal, The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science (Published by SAGE). SAGE is proud to support the AAPSS and the Moynihan award.
