Professor Bess Dawson Hughes named winner of IOF Pierre D. Delmas Award

Longtime IOF Board member honoured for contributions to IOF and its mission to educate patients and health professionals worldwide

Professor Bess Dawson Hughes, Director of the Bone Metabolism Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University and Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, has today been presented with the International Osteoporosis Foundation's (IOF) Pierre D. Delmas Award.

The IOF Pierre D. Delmas Award, named in honour of the IOF's late Founding President, recognizes an individual who has made a significant and unstinting contribution to the advancement of the work of the IOF, through furthering one or more of the mission statements and/or goals of the Foundation.

IOF President John A. Kanis stated, "Professor Bess Dawson Hughes has been among the most active members of the IOF Board of Governance and in her role as IOF General Secretary has been a great asset on the Executive Committee. She has taken a very active role in the Committee of Scientific Advisors as well as developing international relationships. As a highly respected speaker, editor and author, she has contributed widely to global health professional and public awareness about osteoporosis, one of IOF's most important missions."

Bess Dawson-Hughes, M.D. is Director of the Bone Metabolism Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University and Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. Professor Dawson-Hughes has been on the Board of Trustees of the National Osteoporosis Foundation since 1995. In 2002, she began a 3-year term as the President of the NOF. She has served on the Council of the International Bone and Mineral Society and the Advisory Council of the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal, and Skin Diseases. She has served in the past on the councils of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and the American Society of Clinical Nutrition. She is currently on the Editorial Board of the journals Bone and Osteoporosis International. Professor Dawson-Hughes has published more than 400 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, abstracts, and reviews. Her current research is directed at examining ways in which calcium, vitamin D, protein and other nutrients influence age-related loss of bone mass and risk of fragility fractures.

The presentation of the award took place at the European Congress on Osteoporosis & Osteoarthritis (IOF-ECCEO12), which continues until March 24th in Bordeaux, France.
