Grant and Award Announcement

International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research

Tampa, Fla., USA. – The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) has announced Bing-Yan Wang, as the 2012 AADR Neal W. Chilton Fellowship in Clinical Research recipient. She will be recognized at the AADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition in Tampa, Florida, March 24, 2012.

Wang is an associate professor in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston. The Neal W. Chilton Fellowship will support Wang in clinical testing of a mouthwash efficient in eliminating different oral bacteria in vitro in their biofilm forms. Although in vitro results have been promising, a clinical study is essential in determining the efficacy of the mouthwash in humans.

Sponsored by the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Dental and Oral Research and established in memory of Neal W. Chilton, the late executive director of the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Dental and Oral Research, a clinician and statistician who made major contributions to the advancement of clinical research in dentistry, the Neal W. Chilton Fellowship was designed to enable dental clinical faculty to obtain training in clinical research. The Fellowship provides a $5,000 stipend and an additional $1,500 for travel.

About the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Dental and Oral Research

The Task Force on Design and Analysis in Dental and Oral Research is a group of biostatisticians, clinicians, epidemiologists, and basic scientists with experience in oral health research and clinical trials. The membership includes individuals from universities, private research centers, government, and industry. The Task Force has its origins in the 1968 Dental Caries Conference co-sponsored by the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) and the American Dental Association, which established a standardized methodology for conducting clinical trials, testing the efficacy of products designed to prevent dental caries. For 30 years, Dr. Neal Chilton, trained in both dental research and biostatistics, almost single-handedly guided the Task Force as its executive director. His vision and dedication had a seminal influence on the development of the Task Force into its present role as an impartial leader in the design and analysis of oral health clinical research.
