Mass. Eye and Ear Cornea Service and Refractive Surgery Service Director Reza Dana, M.D., M.P.H., M.Sc., is the recipient of the 2012 Chancellor's Award in Neurosciences and Ophthalmology from Louisiana State University (LSU) Health Sciences Center School of Medicine at New Orleans.
The award was presented on Friday, Feb. 3 by Prof. Nicolas Bazan, Chair of Research at LSU. Dr. Dana is also the Associate Chief of Ophthalmology for Academic Programs at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear. Dr. Dana presented the Chancellor's Award Lecture in Neuroscience and Ophthalmology titled "From 'Bench to Bedside': Recent Discoveries in the Immunopathogenic Mechansims of Corneal and Ocular Surface Inflammatory Disorders."
In his abstract for the presentation, Dr. Dana wrote that "significant advances have been made in the past decade in better understanding the cellular and molecular immunopathogenesis of a variety of cornea and ocular surface inflammatory disorders, including dry eye disease, corneal allograft rejection, and corneal angiogenesis. As a result of these discoveries, several novel targets have been identified and validated in preclinical models of disease, with some already through clinical validation. This presentation will present some relevant data from the bench with applicable clinical translations."
In addition to his roles at Mass. Eye and Ear, Dr. Dana holds the Claes H. Dohlman Chair in Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School and serves as the Vice Chairman of the Harvard Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Dana is also Co-Director of Research and a Senior Scientist at Schepens Eye Research Institute.
