RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) -- A University of California, Riverside marketing professor who is an expert on social media, online consumer behavior, and digital marketing trends will receive an outstanding educator award from a global marketing association in October.

Donna Hoffman, the Albert O. Steffey Professor of Marketing and co-director of the Sloan Center for Internet Retailing at the A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management at UC Riverside, will receive the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation Robert B. Clarke Outstanding Educator Award.

"I'm really excited about this honor because it recognizes service, teaching and research, especially the impact my research has on marketing professionals," Hoffman said.

Richard Hochhauser, chairman of the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation, seized on that same point.

"Throughout her career, Professor Hoffman has bridged the divide between the world of academics and the world of practitioners," Hochhauser said in a press release issued by the foundation. "Her expertise is widely sought by practitioners — and her list of award-winning, influential, published research, as well as her accomplishments in teaching — demonstrate her to be the ideal recipient for this honor."

The award will be presented at the 2011 DMEF Direct/Interactive Marketing Research Summit Awards Luncheon on October 2 in Boston. The summit will be held during the Direct Marketing Association's DMA2011 Conference & Exhibition from October 1 to 6 in Boston.

Hoffman has worked on digital marketing strategy with major corporations, including Procter & Gamble, Intel, Microsoft, FedEx.com, Land's End/Sears, and Walmart.com. The Sloan Center for Internet Retailing, which she co-founded, is the first academic center for electronic commerce in the United States.

Hoffman has been awarded many of the marketing field's most prestigious research awards, including the Sheth Foundation/Journal of Marketing Award for long-term contributions to the discipline of marketing, the Stellner Distinguished Scholar Award from the University of Illinois, and the William O'Dell/Journal of Marketing Research Award for long-term research impact.

The Robert B. Clarke Outstanding Educator Award recognizes an academician's overall achievement in direct/interactive marketing education. It is based on an educator's record of teaching, writing, research, and speaking.

Past honorees have included Dr. V. Kumar, Georgia State University; Dr. Edward C. Malthouse, Northwestern University; Dr. Peter S. Fader, the Wharton School; Dr. Venkatesh Shankar, Texas A&M University; Dr. Lisa Spiller, Christopher Newport University; Dr. Marjorie Kalter, New York University; and Dr. John Deighton, Harvard University.
