Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics

Steven J. Ruuth, a professor of Applied and Computational Mathematics at Simon Fraser University has been awarded the Germund Dahlquist Prize for his research contributions to the development and understanding of the numerical solution of initial value problems for ordinary and partial differential equations.

Professor Ruuth received the prize Thursday, July 14, at the Dahlquist Award Ceremony and Lecture at the International Conference on Scientific Computation and Differential Equations (SciCADE 2011) in Toronto, Canada.

His research has contributed to the in-depth understanding of implicit-explicit methods as well as the strong stability of numerical schemes for ordinary differential equations. In addition, his work has had a deep impact on the computation of interface dynamics and problems posed on surfaces.

Established in 1995, the Germund Dahlquist Prize is given by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) to recognize original contributions in the numerical solution of differential equations and numerical methods for scientific computing, fields of study associated with the pioneering Swedish mathematician.

Dahlquist is well known for his ground-breaking studies in the theory of numerical methods for initial value problems in ordinary differential equations, and for his research's continuing impact on computational practice for time-dependent problems.

The award includes a certificate containing a citation and a cash prize of $1000 in addition to travel costs to the meeting at which the prize is presented.
