Tecnalia becomes European advisor in electric mobility

Business Announcement

The electric vehicle is a reality: vehicles with electric motors that avoid pollution. Now the next step is to integrate them into society. To this end, the European Commission has launched Green eMotion, an initiative for promoting electric mobility throughout Europe. Tecnalia Research & Innovation will analyse and guide the activities of network operators, electricity suppliers, car manufacturers and telecommunications companies throughout the whole process.

Tecnalia will analyse the different current business models and their probable future evolution in order to advise European companies, that form part of the electricity supply chain, about the advantages and disadvantages of each of them, as well as to help them identify the most appropriate one for the company, depending on its profile. For instance, it will give advice to electricity supply companies on what types of tariffs can be applied or to car manufacturers about what devices are needed in the vehicle without increasing costs.

It will also help identify new services that electric vehicles can offer to these companies and evaluate the impact that the mass deployment of these vehicles might have on the electricity supply network, on their consequences and how to react to this situation.

Green eMotion

The aim of this initiative is to coordinate various demonstration projects to favour the progressive entry of the electricity car, outstanding amongst which are the implementations of more than 10,000 recharging points throughout Europe. Almost 1,000 are to be installed in Barcelona, Madrid and Malaga, approximately 3,600 in Berlin, 400 in Rome and Pisa, and about 100 in Strasbourg.

Denmark, the country with the largest wind power share in electricity generation worldwide, will have between 2,500 and 3,500 electric cars and will build up to 4,500 charging points in the cities of Copenhagen, Bornholm and Malmö. In Ireland, some 2,000 electric vehicles and about 3,500 charging points will be installed.

The initiative will last for 4 years and has 42 partners participating, amongst which is Tecnalia. The project has a budget of 42 million Euros, 24 of which come from the European Union.

Sustainable Mobility in Tecnalia

Apart from being advisor to European companies in sustainable mobility, Tecnalia supported the initiative by acquiring an electric vehicle with a two fold aims: to act as a research platform and to be used as a transport for its employees. This purchase is the result of an agreement with the Norwegian THINK company, with the aim of technologically enhancing the vehicle.

With this project Tecnalia aims to take one more step to the progressive implantation of the electric vehicle in a more efficient and environmentally-friendly society.
