Magazine recognizes ONR as leader in workplace diversity for 4th time

Magazine honors organization as a '2011 Best Diversity Company'

ARLINGTON, Va.--For the fourth consecutive year, Diversity/Careers in Engineering & Information Technology magazine named the Office of Naval Research (ONR) as a "2011 Best Diversity Company" in its June/July issue, available online June 29.

"Diversity/Careers magazine readers and website visitors voted during March and April of 2011 ... (and) identified the corporations, government agencies and other organizations in the U.S., all employers of technical professionals, that are doing the best work in diversity," Roberta Renard, the magazine's publisher, said in a written communication.

ONR's achievement is in the government and military category. Voters from among the magazine's more than 2 million readers weighed factors, such as "support of minorities and women, attention to work/life balance" and "commitment to supplier diversity."

"This recognition underscores the truly diverse workplace environment ONR offers," said Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Nevin Carr, who leads ONR. "An organization can only achieve its true potential when all voices are heard. Our diversity helps with recruiting efforts, since we are dedicated to attracting people of all backgrounds to increase the Department of the Navy's talent pool of scientists and engineers."

On June 11, ONR was also named a "2011 Top Supporter of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU)" by Career Communications Group, publisher of U.S. Black Engineer and Information Technology magazine.

These two back-to-back honors solidify ONR's position as a command committed to diversity and related initiatives, said Dr. Anthony Junior, ONR's HBCU/Minority Institutions and education programs manager. "We are expanding the diversity of thought that goes into resolving technical challenges and making new scientific discoveries, and helping to develop the next-generation STEM workforce."

Diversity/Careers, launched in 1993, focuses on technical professions for groups traditionally underrepresented in technology. The magazine is aimed at engineering and information technology professionals who are women, African-Americans, Hispanics, Asian-Americans, Native Americans, people with disabilities and members of other diversity groups.
