On June 30, 2011, the New York Academy of Sciences' Science Alliance and Scientists Without Borders are jointly hosting "Innovating on a Shoestring," a hands-on workshop that will examine how to develop and deploy appropriate and necessary technologies for patients and physicians in low-resource settings. The 2-hour interactive presentation will be led by Dr. Jacqueline Linnes of D-Lab, a world-famous teaching laboratory located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). D-Lab is dedicated to developing and implementing innovative and low-cost solutions to global development and health issues. Find out more at d-lab.mit.edu.
The challenge of low-resource innovation calls for an approach that marries practical ingenuity with advanced scientific know-how. Participants will be introduced to the relevant design principles and led through a number of successful case studies. Graduate students, postdocs, medical students and others interested in helping to solve myriad challenges facing the developing world are encouraged to attend. This workshop will provide practical tips on how to identify real-world problems, build on-the-ground partnerships and find ways to implement practical solutions.
