Alexandria, Va., USA - The International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) have published the proceedings from the Sixth World Workshop on Oral Health and Disease in AIDS (WW6), held in Beijing, China, April 21-24, 2009. The proceedings are published in the April 2011 issue of the Advances in Dental Research, an E-supplement to the Journal of Dental Research.

IADR/AADR, along with several other organizations, supported the WW6, which featured 22 plenary speakers, nine individual workshops, posters and education sessions. The main goals of the WW6 were to bring together clinicians and laboratory scientists interested in HIV/AIDS-related oral manifestations to share global perspectives, knowledge and understanding of oral health and disease in HIV infection, and to identify research needs taking into account worldwide perspectives and opportunities.

AADR, with the assistance of the University of California, San Francisco and Past President John Greenspan, was a recipient of a National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research U-13 conference grant which enabled 17 researchers from low- and middle-income countries to attend the important conference.

During the meeting, 170 delegates from 25 countries discussed and unanimously endorsed the issue of the Beijing Declaration of 2009. In the declaration, the participants conclude that evidence now supports the view that oral health care professionals with HIV do not pose a risk of transmission to patients in the dental setting. The complete declaration can be read in the current issue of Advances.

"The science presented at the Sixth World Workshop on Oral Health and Disease in AIDS has helped set a worldwide research agenda," said IADR Past President Stephen Challacombe and co-guest editor of the issue, along with Maeve Coogan, Tao Xu, Guang-yan Yu, and John Greenspan.

"In addition to the education sessions and workshops, more than 50 scientific abstracts were presented at the workshop," said IADR President E. Dianne Rekow. "IADR and AADR are pleased to make the presented research available in the April 2011 issue of the Advances in Dental Research."
