Adam H. Buchanan, MS, MPH, a board-certified genetic counselor and research scientist at Duke University was honored as the 2011 recipient of the PerkinElmer Signature Genomic Laboratories Travel Award at the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) 2011 Annual Clinical Genetics Meeting in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Mr. Buchanan was selected for the award for his platform presentation, "Telemedicine vs. in-person cancer genetic counseling in rural oncology clinics: a randomized controlled trial of cost and patient satisfaction."

In his presentation, Mr. Buchanan concluded that cancer genetic counseling provided via telemedicine was as well accepted as in-person counseling at less than half the cost. These findings are promising for improving access to cancer genetic counseling in underserved areas.

Mr. Buchanan provides cancer genetic counseling to patients at Duke University Hospital and several out- lying community hospitals, including Duke Raleigh Hospital. He is also involved in research on improving access to cancer genetic counseling among underserved populations.

Mr. Buchanan received his BS in Biology with high honors in 1998 from Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, his MPH in Health Behavior and Health Education in 2000 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC, and his MS in Genetic Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, NC.

He is a certified genetic counselor with the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

The PerkinElmer Signature Genomics Travel Award is given to a selected student, trainee or junior faculty ACMG member whose abstract submission was chosen as a platform presentation during the ACMG An- nual Clinical Genetics Meeting.

The ACMG program committee selects the Travel Award recipient based on scientific merit. In recogni- tion of the selected presentation, Signature Genomics covers the travel costs for the recipient to the ACMG meeting. "The American College of Medical Genetics Foundation is thankful for Signature Genom- ics' generous support of developing medical genetic researchers through the Signature Genomics Travel Award," said R. Rodney Howell, MD, FACMG, president of the ACMGF.

"Signature Genomics is committed to supporting young researchers in the field of medical genetics," said Lisa G. Shaffer, PhD, president of Signature Genomics, PerkinElmer. "We are proud to be sponsoring the award again this year to recognize the accomplishments of Mr. Buchanan."
