The Indian Institute of Metals is to confer honorary membership on the Vice-Chancellor of the University of York Professor Brian Cantor.
The honour will be conferred at the 64th Annual Technical Meeting of IIM in recognition of Professor Cantor's "distinguished services and significant contributions" to metallurgical education and research.
He will also give the keynote memorial lecture for his friend and colleague, Professor P Ramachandrarao, who died earlier this year. The subject of the lecture will be Multicomponent High-Entropy Alloys.
Professor Cantor has long-standing links with leading Indian metallurgists and material scientists. He was a British Council Research Fellow at Banares University in 1980 and has since made many academic and scientific visits to India. P Ramachandrarao was one of the senior visiting researchers he worked with at Cambridge, Sussex and Oxford Universities.
Professor Cantor said: "It is both a great honour and tremendous pleasure to accept membership of such an important and prestigious body as the Indian Institute of Metals. I feel equally privileged to be chosen to deliver a memorial address in honour of my sadly missed long-standing friend and colleague P Ramachandrarao or, as I always called him, Rao."
The conferment takes place at the National Science Seminar Complex, Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore.
While in India, Professor Cantor accompanied by the University's Research and Enterprise, Mark Mortimer, will have meetings with the Director of the Indian Institute of Science, Professor P.Balaram, to discuss research collaborations between Bangalore and York, and representatives of UKTI, the latter to discuss York's role as a Science City. He will also meet alumni of the University of York to discuss matters mutual interest.
