Chicago - On November 14, Donald M. Lloyd-Jones MD, received the 2010 Chairman's Award in Chicago at the opening sessions of the American Heart Associations (AHA) Scientific Sessions 2010. The Chairman's Award is the highest honor bestowed by the AHA for volunteer services. Dr. Lloyd-Jones is a preventive cardiologist and chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine, medical director of the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute's Center for Preventive Cardiology, interim director of the Clinical Trials Unit at Northwestern and associate professor of Medicine and Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
Dr. Lloyd-Jones is being honored for his outstanding contribution to further the AHA's Strategic Impact Goals. Dr. Lloyd Jones is the lead author of the AHA 2020 Strategic Impact Goal that commits to improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent in the next decade while also reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent. The focus of the goal will be preventing heart disease and stroke by helping people identify and adopt healthier lifestyle choices. This will be the first time the AHA has adopted better health as a principal goal.
To help reach this goal, the AHA is encouraging everyone to live a healthier lifestyle by taking the following preventive steps: get active, eat better, lose weight, stop smoking, control cholesterol, manage blood pressure and reduce blood sugar. Each of these steps alone should come as no surprise. What is surprising is the power of the complete package of these factors – together, they can be the fountain of youth for your heart, and lead to longer, healthier life with better quality of life.
In addition to his involvement with the AHA, Dr. Lloyd-Jones is also a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a past recipient of the American Society of Hypertension's Young Scholar Award. Dr. Lloyd-Jones is a member of three panels of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute's Clinical Guidelines for Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: the Integrated Guidelines Panel, ATP-IV and the Risk Assessment Work Group. He is a recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Patterson Award for Teacher of the Year from the Department of Medicine and the Teacher of the Year from the Division of Cardiology at Feinberg. A prolific researcher, he has published more than 95 original papers in peer-reviewed publications and currently has a major role in 12 research grants.
