INDIANAPOLIS, IN – September 13, 2010 – The Society for Nutrition Education (SNE) honored several members for their work in nutrition education during the 2010 Annual Conference in Reno, Nevada, July 24 – 27, 2010. These awards were distributed to members for their dedication and excellence in nutrition education.

The Helen Denning Ullrich Annual Award of Excellence

The Helen Denning Ullrich Annual Award of Excellence is given each year to an SNE member for outstanding achievement in the field of nutrition education. This award is named in honor of Helen Ullrich, a dedicated member of SNE and the first editor of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior (JNEB). The 2010 winner of this award was Suzanne Pelican, MS, RD, of the University of Wyoming Extension.

"In her more than 30 years in the field of nutrition education, Suzy's contributions are immeasurable. Whether it is any of the nutrition-related organizations that Suzy has stabilized and grown or the $4.6 million in grants she has received to support these programs, Suzy is most deserving of this award," says Guen Brown, former SNE President.

"Suzy's 'WIN the Rockies' program has been so successful in preventing weight gain in the intervention communities that it has become a model for full scale community interventions," comments Susan Welsh, National Program Leader for Nutrition in USDA's National Institute of Food and Technology.

The SNE Mid-Career Award

The SNE Mid-Career Award is presented each year to a member of the SNE, in "mid-career," who has achieved significant professional accomplishments in the field of nutrition education as well as important contributions to the mission of the SNE. The 2010 winner of this award was Mary Murimi, PhD, RD, LDN, of Louisiana Tech University.

"Dr. Murimi's Dubach Health Outreach Project (DUHOP) with its train-the-trainer model and comprehensive program targeting a rural community with limited access to health care and health and fitness facilities has received national and international attention," says Dr. Aliza Stark, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. In addition to Dr. Murimi's contributions to nutrition education, she has been committed to SNE as well through her work on various committees, divisions as well as JNEB as an Associate Editor.

"Dr. Murimi truly wants her input on manuscripts to be constructive and helpful to the authors, not just for the publication, but for their careers as scientists," remarks Karen Chapman-Novakofski, RD, LDN, PhD, Editor-in-Chief, JNEB. "Dr. Murimi has been an ardent supporter of the Society and Journal, and will continue to be a leader in the nutrition arena."
