The 16th International Conference on Open and Sustainable Building (O&SB2010) was held from the 17th to the 19th of May this year in Bilbao. Organised by the Tecnalia Technological Centre and the international CIB W104 network, more than 40 papers were presented at the event and have been published in a book entitled The 16th International Conference on Open and Sustainable Building (O&SB2010). The introduction to the book is a reflection on the Open Building or adaptable building movement, the author of which, Dr. Stephen Kendall fromthe Architecture Department at the Ball State University in the USA, is one of the coordinators of CIB W104.

Amongst the papers incorporated into the book are questions such as health care and housing, building technologies and design methods, aspects which are a clear representation of research and practices being developed by experts from Asia, Europe, Africa, North America and South America. The relevance of the O&SB2010 conference was clear from the huge attendance - 130 persons attended the seminars from 16 countries: Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the USA.

Besides this book, a select number of authors participating in the conference will be invited to review the papers presented, in order to be published in a special edition of the indexed Open House International Journal (www.openhouse-int.com) publication, to come out in March 2011. This journal deals with all kinds of themes related to the urban landscape.

Architects of the future

Another book, related to the O&SB2010, has been brought out recently. This is the publication, Detaching from Architecture. The 2nd International Student Competition in Architecture and based on the 2nd Detaching Architecture International Competition for students of this discipline, and the winners of which were presented at the same conference in May. The conference was organised by Doctor Beisi Jia (lecturer in Architecture at the University of Hong Kong) at a global level and by Tecnalia locally. An international jury of architects reviewed more than 70 presented projects, six winning proposals having been chosen. These projects will be brought out in a new publication.
