AIAA Foundation announces winners of 2009-2010 Undergraduate Team Space Design Competition

August 30, 2010 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Foundation (AIAA Foundation) is pleased to announce that the team from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Ga., has won first prize in the AIAA Foundation's annual Undergraduate Team Space Design Competition.

The 2009� contest required competing teams to design a space weather monitoring constellation of nanostats or cubesats to monitor the space weather environment around the second Lagrange point of the Earth–Sun system (L2), to provide environmental data for future space missions around the L2 region.

Teams winning awards were:

First Prize: Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Ga., for their design "Space Weather Experimental Platform (SWEPT)." David A. Spencer, faculty advisor, Mathew LeVine, team leader, and team members Suyog Benegalrao, Danielle Hansen, Sydney Lewis, Gabriel Morocoima, and Stephen Rooks. The team will receive an award of $2,500 from the AIAA Foundation.

Second Prize: Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Ga., for their design "SciNet L-CoNERR." David A. Spencer, faculty advisor, Carlee A. Bishop, project advisor, Travis O'Neal, team leader, and team members Anthony Piplica, Andrew Punnoose, Subbiah Ramasamy, Amy Stevens, and Ankit Tiwari. The team will receive an award of $1,500 from the AIAA Foundation.

Third Prize: University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Ill., for their design "Alecto Technical's Stalwart Space Weather Observatory." Victoria Coverstone, faculty advisor, Elizabeth Chapman, team leader, and team members Drew Ahern, Stanley Burns, Dan Fong, Joseph Gonzalez, and Krunal Patel. The team will receive an award of $1,000 from the AIAA Foundation.
