Book Announcement

American Educational Research Association

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 9, 2010—The American Educational Research Association (AERA) has announced plans to publish a new edition of its signature volume, Handbook of Research on Teaching, and named two ETS scholars—Drew H. Gitomer and Courtney A. Bell—as co-editors. AERA anticipates that this fifth edition will appear in 2014, providing analytic understanding of the state of knowledge and inform future directions of education research.

Since the Handbook's initial publication in 1963, the volume has been widely regarded for its comprehensive review of research on teaching across multiple facets and related fields and considered to be an essential resource for scholars and students who study teaching and learning. The Handbook's most recent 1,278-page edition was published in 2001, with Virginia Richardson as editor. Other editions were published in 1973 and 1986.

Gitomer is Distinguished Researcher at Educational Testing Service (ETS) in Princeton, N.J., and Director, Understanding Teaching Quality Center, ETS. His experience in the field of scholarly publication is wide-ranging. Gitomer served as co-editor of AERA's peer-reviewed journal Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis from 2007 to 2009, and also edited the 2008 volume Measurement Issues and Assessment for Teaching Quality. He has served as a reviewer for numerous journals, including two other AERA journals, Educational Researcher and Review of Educational Research. In addition to writing book chapters that relate to teaching, teacher development and assessment, he has published in scholarly journals, ranging from the Journal of Teacher Education and Journal of Educational Psychology to the Journal of Educational Measurement and Instructional Science. He frequently is invited to serve on advisory boards and panels, including the AERA Panel on Research and Teacher Education. Gitomer holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in cognitive psychology from the University of Pittsburgh.

Bell is Research Scientist in the Research Division of ETS and in the Understanding Teaching Quality Center. Prior to joining ETS in 2007, Bell was an assistant professor of educational policy at the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education, where she received an Outstanding Young Researcher award. She has published in numerous journals, including Teaching and Teacher Education, Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, and Teachers College Record. She has reviewed for numerous journals and was a 2006 outstanding reviewer for the American Educational Research Journal's Social and Institutional Analysis section. She was awarded an AERA-ETS Postdoctoral Fellowship in Measurement and served as a Fellow from 2007 to 2008. Bell received a Ph.D. degree in curriculum, teaching, and educational policy from Michigan State University. She previously taught high school science.

Gitomer and Bell, who were selected by the AERA Books Editorial Board after an extensive search, will be joined by an editorial advisory board to guide development of this upcoming fifth edition. Envisioned as a volume that broadly integrates across specialized topics, the Handbook will cover traditional and non-traditional topics, as well as international perspectives about research on teaching.
