'Inclusive Play' by Theresa Casey

Book Announcement

SAGE Publications UK

London (May 5th, 2010) – Inclusive Play by Theresa Casey published by SAGE is a practical and child-focused book giving education practitioners the tools to make sure all the children in their care are included and involved in the play opportunities provided. Play is so important to optimal child development that it has been recognized by the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights as a right of every child. Play has also been demonstrated as integral to the academic environment and with this in mind Theresa Casey lays out clear suggestions regarding play in a straightforward manner, using logical stages that make them easy to implement for all early years practitioners and those studying early years at any level, including guidance on writing a play policy.

From strategies which can be implemented quickly and easily in order to test out an approach or change, through to team discussion activities, observation and reflection formats and longer term planning for the physical environment, this title has a focus on appreciating children as individuals. Inclusive Play is illustrated with diagrams, engaging photos and line-drawings to bring the ideas to life. It is a key book for those in practice and underpinned by sound theory, helping to encourage and support inclusive play; with activities to try and ideas for small changes that can make a big impact.

Inside the second edition, new content includes:

  • Consideration of the early years curricula across the whole of the UK
  • A new chapter on risk and challenge in play
  • New case studies
  • International perspectives
  • Full coverage of the Birth to Eight age range
  • Consideration of inclusive play from a children's rights perspective
