Elsevier introduces innovative new pharmacology text

'Pharmacology and Therapeutics: Principles to Practice' being well received

Book Announcement

Elsevier

Philadelphia, PA, 7 December 2009 – Elsevier, the world-leading publisher of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, proudly announces the early success and rapid acceptance of its recently released Pharmacology and Therapeutics: Principles to Practice (http://www.us.elsevierhealth.com/isbn/9781416032915/Pharmacology-and-Therapeutics), an innovative new pharmacology textbook designed to better meet the needs of today's residents and practitioners. In just a few short months since its introduction, the book has garnered critical acclaim and has earned its place among other more established pharmacology reference books (http://www.us.elsevierhealth.com/medicine/pharmacology).

Up until now, pharmacology references have focused on either the basic or clinical aspects of the field. By contrast, Pharmacology and Therapeutics encompasses the entire continuum from underlying science through innovation, translation, regulation, and clinical implementation, providing the integrated perspectives that are needed to fully master human therapeutics today.

Edited by Drs. Scott Waldman and Andre Terzic – both past presidents of the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics – the book features contributions from many of the most respected names in pharmacology. These authors, all leaders in their respective disciplines, establish the standards for translating fundamental observations in the laboratory into novel therapeutic approaches for managing patients – including rapidly growing areas such as pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics, regenerative pharmacology, stem cell therapies, and the emerging field of individualized medicine. Evidence-based therapeutic guidelines are included throughout, where available, as are appropriate discussions of nutrition, complementary and alternative medicines, nutraceuticals, and dietary supplements.

"I applaud the Editors for bringing together, between the covers of this first edition, a superb textbook bridging basic and clinical pharmacology, from classic principles to future concepts," writes Nobel Laureate Ferid Murad, MD, PhD in the book's Foreword. "This exciting textbook will be invaluable to students, scholars, and professionals across the practice in human therapeutics."

"This is an outstanding textbook that connects the recent advances in basic principles with the practice of medicine," added Thomas L. Pazdernik, PhD, University of Kansas Medical Center. "It is a must-have book for those involved in drug discovery, translational research, and the teaching of evidence-based medicine."

In its June 2009 issue, the British Journal of Hospital Medicine cites the narrative as "… so easy to read that it makes extracting the information from the pages almost effortless. Every chapter is supported by a good selection of references to original research and review articles, both old and new, and the whole text is available online allowing it to be accessed wherever there is internet connection."
