WASHINGTON, DC, September 18, 2009—. A symposium addressed to “Cumulative Knowledge, the Advancement of Theory, and Research Rigor in Education Research” will be presented on September 29, 2009 in Vienna Austria to commemorate the founding of the World Education Research Association (WERA) and its world-wide objectives for the advancement of education research.

Three internationally recognized scholars whose research and research programs have advanced understanding of education and learning will present papers from the vantage of their specialties, their understanding of the state of the science, and the importance of building theory and refining measures and methods in a world often preoccupied by evidenced-based problem solving. The speakers are Drs. Eva Baker (University of California, Los Angeles and Co-Director of the Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing), Yin Cheong Cheng (Vice President for Research & Development and Chair Professor, Hong Kong Institute of Education), and Eckhard Klieme (Johann Wolfgang Goethe University and Director of the German Institute for International Educational Research).

WERA is an international, non-profit, non-governmental association of associations newly established for scientific and scholarly purposes. WERA seeks to forge new collaboration and cooperation at a global scale on such issues as building capacity and interest in education research, advancing education research policies and practices, and promoting the use and application of education research around the world. The ambition is to transcend what any one association can accomplish in its own country, region, or area of specialization.

Currently, 25 national, regional, and international specialty research associations are founding members of WERA, representing more than 60,000 researchers worldwide. It was formally established by national, regional, and international specialty education research associations meeting in San Diego, California on April 18, 2009. Ingrid Gogolin serves as WERA Interim President, and Felice Levine as WERA Interim Secretary General. The first WERA Council meeting takes place in Vienna on September 26-27, 2009. WERA is being hosted by the European Educational Research Association (EERA) during its annual European Conference on Educational Research (ECER) at the University of Vienna from September 25-30, 2009.
