He is the chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery and the Fred Lebow Chair in Neuro-Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and professor of Neurological Surgery at Cornell University's Weill Medical College in New York. He previously held leadership positions at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco.

Dr. Gutin has also had leadership roles in several of the nation's top medical organizations, including the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, the American College of Surgeons, and the Neurosurgical Society of America. He has published close to 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals, co-authored two textbooks on radiation injury to the nervous system and the diagnosis and treatment of intracranial tumors, respectively, and has made innumerable presentations at medical meetings throughout his career.

"Dr. Gutin has played a critical role in advancing the role of multidisciplinary care and specifically of the use of radiation to treat and cure patients with brain tumors," Patricia Eifel, M.D., FASTRO, ASTRO chairman and a professor of radiation oncology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, said. "I am honored to be able to recognize him for the extraordinary work he has done in his career and to welcome him as our honorary member."
