Springer book receives prestigious award in earthquake research

The Japan Society of Civil Engineers singles out 'Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering'

Grant and Award Announcement

Springer

The Springer book Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, by Ikuo Towhata, has received the 2008 Book of the Year Award from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE). This award is given to promote development and encourage research in the area of civil engineering. The 2008 Book of the Year Award was presented on 29 May 2009 in Tokyo.

Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering presents all issues in the field in a comprehensive way. It summarizes the present knowledge on earthquake hazards and their causative mechanisms and presents experimental studies on nonlinear complex soil behavior. Also discussed are an analysis to predict ground behavior during earthquakes, field studies to determine nature of real ground as input data for analysis, and damage mitigation technologies. Information obtained from earthquake damage investigation (such as ground motion, landslides, earth pressure, fault action or liquefaction) as well as data from laboratory tests and field investigation are supplied, together with exercises and questions.

"On behalf of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers, I am pleased to announce that the book Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering published by Springer has been presented with the 2008 JSCE Book of the Year Award. The book, which summarizes the latest and most sophisticated technology on geotechnical earthquake engineering, has made a substantial contribution to civil engineering literature and profession. It is truly a milestone book in the civil engineering field. The hard work and efforts made by the publisher in cooperation with the author to produce the book are deeply appreciated," said Dr. Hideo Kayahara, President of JSCE.

The Japan Society of Civil Engineers was established as an incorporated association in 1914 entrusted with the mission to contribute to the advancement of scientific culture by promoting the field of civil engineering and the expansion of civil engineering activities. Since its establishment, JSCE has endeavored to achieve the above mission, through extensive activities including scientific exchange among members and researchers and promotion of science and technologies relating to the field of civil engineering. Presenting awards to promote development and further research in civil engineering is one of the most important activities of JSCE.
