Montreal, May 26, 2009 – François Furstenberg, a Université de Montréal history professor, is headed to New York City to write about the French and American revolutions thanks to a prestigious fellowship. He has been named the Gilder Lehrman Fellow in American History by the New York Public Library's Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers.

The fellowship will allow Furstenberg, who is J.W. McConnell Family Foundation Chair in American Studies at the Université de Montréal, to complete a new book connecting the American and French revolutions of the 18th Century. Entitled "When the United States Spoke French: Trans-Atlantic Politics, Land, and Diplomacy in the Age of Revolution," the book will follow a group of transatlantic French émigrés who integrated themselves into the young nation's political and economic life.

From September 2009 through May 2010, Furstenberg will have full access to the New York Public Library's unparalleled research collections, online resources as well as assistance from curatorial staff. Cullman Fellows also receive a stipend and office space in the landmark Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at Fifth Ave. and 42nd St.

This year, the Cullman fellowship program received 238 applications from 19 countries. For more information about the current and former Cullman Fellows, please visit www.nypl.org/csw.

Furstenberg is the author of another book on American history, the critically lauded, "In the Name of the Father: Washington's Legacy, Slavery, and the Making of a Nation" (New York: Penguin, 2006).
