Grant and Award Announcement

International Osteoporosis Foundation

Dr. Nick Harvey of the MRC Epidemiology Resource Center, University of Southhampton, was presented with the 2009 ESCEO-IOF Alliance for Better Bone Health Young Investigator Award at the ECCEO9-IOF meeting held in Athens from March 18 to 21, 2009.

The award honorarium of 2,000 euro is sponsored by the Alliance for Better Bone Health (P&G Pharmaceuticals and Sanofi-Aventis) in recognition of outstanding research, based on the most highly scored abstract submitted by a lead investigator under the age of 40. Dr Harvey was presented with the award certificate by IOF President John Kanis, David Cahall of Sanofi-Aventis and Stephane Horlait of P&G Pharmaceuticals at an award ceremony on March 21, 2009.

Entitled "Indices of intrauterine growth may differentially predict postnatal development of skeletal size and volumetric density", the award-winning abstract describes the results of a study on 380 children followed-up in utero, in which ultrasound was used to measure the velocity of both fetal femur and abdominal growth between 19 and 34 weeks gestation. The measurements were then related to bone size and density at 4 years of age. Results indicate that tracking of skeletal growth has its origins in utero and that there is a possible discordance between influences on volumetric density and skeletal size.
