As part of the Opening Ceremonies of its 87th General Session & Exhibition, convening today at the Miami Beach Convention Center, the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) will present numerous prestigious awards and fellowships. Details follow:
- IADR Honorary Membership
The three most recent living IADR Past Presidents may select an Honorary Member who has made significant contributions to and/or supports dental research. This year, Honorary Membership is bestowed on Anthony Fauci, MD, Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1984, Dr. Fauci became Director of NIAID, where he oversees an extensive research portfolio of basic and applied research to prevent, diagnose, and treat infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS, influenza, tuberculosis, malaria and illness from potential agents of bioterrorism. Dr. Fauci serves as an advisor to the White House and Department of Health and Human Services on global AIDS issues, and on initiatives to improve medical and public health preparedness against emerging infectious disease threats.
- IADR Distinguished Service Award
The IADR Board of Directors established this prestigious award to recognize a member who has not served as an IADR Officer, but who has performed outstanding service to the Association or distinguished service over a period of time. This year's winner is Fujio Miura from the Japanese Division. Dr. Miura, Professor Emeritus at Tokyo Medical & Dental University, is being honored for his contribution to the establishment and increased growth of the Japanese Division of the IADR. This is the 12th year that the award, sponsored by J. Morita USA, Inc., has been presented.
- IADR/AADR William J. Gies Awards
These awards, for the best papers published in the Journal of Dental Research, are presented in three categories: Biological, Biomaterials & Bioengineering, and Clinical. The award is named for William J. Gies, the founder of the Journal of Dental Research. Nominations may be made by any person, and the papers to be chosen must describe work which has very significantly advanced knowledge in some aspect of dental research. Papers eligible for consideration are those published during the 12-month period (July-June) immediately preceding the IADR General Session. The award consists of a cash prize of $1,000 and a plaque. The Gies Award is open to anyone who publishes in the Journal of Dental Research, the official publication of the IADR/AADR. The awards are sponsored by J. Morita USA, Inc.
The award in the Biological Research category is presented to E. Scheller, J. Chang, and C. Wang for the paper "Wnt/β-catenin Inhibits Dental Pulp Stem Cell Differentiation" J Dent Res 87: 126-130, February, 2008
The award in the Biomaterials & Bioengineering Research category is presented to S. Paris, H. Meyer-Lueckel, and A.M. Kielbassa for the paper "Resin Infiltration of Natural Caries Lesions" J Dent Res 86: 662-666, July, 2007
The award in the Clinical Research category is presented to Anne E. Sanders, Gary D. Slade, G. Turrell, A.J. Spencer, and W. Marcenes for the paper "Does Psychological Stress Mediate Social Deprivation in Tooth Loss?" J Dent Res 86:1166-1170, December, 2007.
- IADR/AADR Journal of Dental Research "Cover of the Year, 2008"
This recognition is presented annually for the previous year's JDR cover image that enhances the impact of the article, and is both scientifically novel and aesthetically pleasing. The "Cover of the Year, 2008" award is presented to: C. E. Semino for the paper "Self-assembling Peptides: From Bio-inspired Materials to Bone Regeneration,"J Dent Res 87(7): 600-616, 2008. This is the fourth year of the award.
- IADR E.W. Borrow Memorial Award
Presented to Lars Petersson (Halmstad Hospital, Sweden), this award recognizes and stimulates research in oral health prevention for children, with a priority for caries prevention using fluoride in different formats. This is the 18th year of the E.W. Borrow Memorial Award, which consists of a plaque and a cash prize of $2,000.
- IADR David B. Scott Fellowship
Presented to Andreas Niklas (University of Regensburg Medical School, Germany; Continental European Division), this Fellowship is awarded annually to a dental student in one IADR Division, the honor rotating alphabetically through the Divisions. The Fellowship is supported by the proceeds of an endowment created by the late Mrs. Nancy M. Scott in honor of her husband, David B. Scott, a Past President of the IADR. The Fellowship consists of a cash prize of $2500.
- IADR/Lion Dental Research Award for Junior Investigators
This award, generously sponsored by the Lion Corporation, is intended to support improvements in oral health sciences through the stimulation of junior investigators by: (1) recognition of outstanding and innovative research in basic dental science for the improvement of public dental health; and (2) recognition of applied research achievements for the improvement and development of oral care products for the prevention of oral diseases. The cash prize is $2,000 each, and the 2009 award-winners are: (representing the Cariology Research Group), Sebastian Paris (University of Kiel, Germany); and (representing the Microbiology/Immunology Research Group), Ranawaka Perera (University of Hong Kong).
- IADR Toshio Nakao Fellowship
The IADR/Toshio Nakao Fellowship is a bi-annual fellowship in the amount of up to $15,000 and is supported by the GC Corporation. The winner is Mirela Shinohara from the State University of Amazon in Brazil.
- IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Awards
These travel awards were established, and generously sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive, to support students and young investigators doing research in the area of oral disease prevention. The award is given this year to six individuals, with a cash prize of $2,000 each. This year's recipients are: Anastasia Papapostolou (Ohio State University, Columbus, USA), Juliano Pessan (São Paulo State University, Brazil), Yoav Neumann (Hebrew University, Israel), Linda Okoye (University of Nigeria), Daniel Moreinos (Hebrew University, Israel), and Ranawaka Perera (University of Hong Kong).
- IADR/Unilever Hatton Divisional Awards
These awards were established to encourage outstanding young dental scientists to carry out research, attend the annual IADR General Session, and compete in the IADR/Unilever Hatton Competition and Awards. The Awards are generously sponsored by Unilever. - IADR/Unilever Hatton Awards Competition
The IADR/Unilever Hatton Awards Competition is designed to provide an opportunity for the best junior investigators from all IADR Divisions to present their research at the annual IADR General Session. Of these international competitors, up to six may receive cash prizes (first place award of $1,600 and $800 for second place) and trophy awards in the junior and senior categories. Winners will be announced on site and publicized at www.iadr.org after the meeting.
- AADR Bloc Travel Grant
The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) received a Bloc Travel Grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) to support travel for U.S. dental students and NIDCR-supported trainees to present their research at the IADR General Session in Miami. This year, the AADR was able to award grants to 50 individuals in the amount of $1,000 each:

- AADR Honorary Membership
The three most recent living Past Presidents of the AADR may elect an honorary member. This person is not a member of the Association but has made significant contributions to and/or supports dental research. This year's honorary member, selected unanimously, is The Honorable Mike Simpson, Congressman, Second Congressional District, Idaho. Congressman Simpson, who began his career as a dentist, advocated for dental research and increased NIH funding. He has become an important and visible Congressional ally for AADR advocacy efforts. Congressman Simpson is currently serving his fifth term in the House of Representatives.
- AADR Jack Hein Public Service Award
The 2009 award is presented to Roseann Mulligan, from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA. This award honors individuals who have given exemplary service in the area of public affairs by consistently promoting the interests and activities of oral health research to a wide constituency. The award is supported by the AADR and consists of a plaque. Previous recipients of the Award are Jack W. Hein (1996), Gertrude Quigley (1997), Christopher Squier (1998), Jay Gershen (1999), Anthony Picozzi (2000), John Crawford (2001), Michael Barnett (2002), Judith Sherman (2003), Michael Alfano (2004), Linda Niessen (2005), Robert (Skip) Collins (2006), Dushanka Kleinman (2007), and Joan Steen Wilentz (2008).
- AADR William B. Clark Fellowship
The AADR William B. Clark Fellowship winner this year is Maria Geisinger from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. This Fellowship, supported by Crest Oral-B, P&G Professional Oral Health, is given in memory of William B. Clark, the late Professor of Oral Biology and Director of the Periodontal Research Center at the University of Florida.
- AADR Neal W. Chilton Fellowship
This AADR Fellowship, sponsored by the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Dental and Oral Research, has been established in memory of Neal W. Chilton and is designed to enable dental clinical faculty to obtain training in clinical research. The 2009 Fellowship is awarded to Maria Orellana from the University of California, San Francisco.
- AADR National Student Research Group Mentor Award
This award is presented to Roger B. Johnson (University of Mississippi School of Dentistry, Jackson), with sincere appreciation for dedication and commitment to mentoring and inspiring the next generation of researchers.
- AADR/Johnson & Johnson Oral Health Products Hatton Awards
Six recipients will be selected after the AADR Hatton Awards Competition, to be held in Miami on Tuesday, March 31, 2009. The competition is designed for junior investigators in three categories—junior, senior, and post-doctoral—who exhibit potential for a productive career in dental research. The six winners will proceed to the IADR Unilever Hatton Awards Competition later the same day.
- AADR Student Research Fellowships
These Fellowships, supported by several major industrial companies, as well as by AADR and IADR Group Chapters, Sections, and members, have been created to encourage dental students living in the United States to consider careers in oral health research. The 2009 recipients will be announced at the Opening Ceremonies, April 1, 2009 in Miami.
- AADR NSRG DENTSPLY/Caulk Competition
The 22nd annual AADR National Student Research Group (NSRG) DENTSPLY/Caulk Student Award Competition, sponsored by DENTSPLY/Caulk, will be held in Miami, on Thursday, April 2, 2009. This competition highlights original poster presentations by AADR student members within dental, oral health, and craniofacial research. The 2009 competition features 14 students from 9 U.S. dental schools and awards a total of $2,500 USD in cash prizes to the top three participants in both clinical and basic science categories.
