LAUREL, MD - The 2009 AIUM Memorial Hall of Fame awards will be presented on April 3 at the AIUM Annual Convention New York, New York. The Memorial Hall of Fame, established in 1981, serves as a posthumous tribute to a creative and devoted physician, research scientist, or other individual who has been an active member of the AIUM and contributed to the field of ultrasound in medicine. This year's awards will honor Fred Winsberg, MD, Martin Resnick, MD, and Horace Thompson, MD.
Fred Winsberg, MD, 1931-2007, graduated from the University of Chicago in 1955. He completed radiology training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and was chief of radiology at Lincoln Hospital, part of the same university, until 1970. He remained an attending radiologist and professor of radiology at various institutions throughout his career. He was a strong, early proponent of real-time ultrasound and is considered a pioneer of diagnostic ultrasound.
Martin Resnick, MD, 1943-2007, earned his medical degree from Wake Forest University, Bowman Gray School of Medicine, in 1969. An early user of ultrasound in urology, Dr Resnick was an accomplished researcher and professor in the field of urology as well as a strong advocate of proper training for ultrasound users. Dr Resnick was editor of The Journal of Urology, founding editor of Contemporary Urology, and former president of the American Urological Association. He also served as professor of urology and chair of the Department of Urology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Horace Thompson, MD, 1921-2008, received his medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1948. Dr Thompson is a former president of the AIUM and a former president of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology. He is regarded by many as the "father" of obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound in the United States. A devout researcher in medical ultrasound, Dr Thompson was a professor of obstetrics and gynecology, served as chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Denver General Hospital, and operated a private practice in Denver, Colorado.
A plaque honoring each member of the Hall of Fame is displayed in a designated place in the Executive Office of the AIUM.
The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine is a multidisciplinary association dedicated to advancing the safe and effective use of ultrasound in medicine through professional and public education, research, development of guidelines, and accreditation.
