AIUM Presents 2009 Joseph H. Holmes Pioneer Awards

American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine

LAUREL, MD—The 2009 Joseph H. Holmes Pioneer Awards will be presented on April 3 at the AIUM Annual Convention in New York, New York. The awards honor two recipients who have contributed to the growth and development of medical ultrasound. The clinical science award will be presented to Lawrence Platt, MD, of the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California in Los Angeles, California. The basic science award will be presented to Ernest Feleppa, PhD, director of the Frederic Lizzi Center for Biomedical Engineering at Riverside Research Institute in New York, New York.

Clinical science awardee Lawrence Platt, MD, has authored more than 300 publications, including 3 books and 285 peer-reviewed articles. His research includes studies in prenatal diagnosis, ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology, and the biophysical assessment of the fetal condition. His work has been funded by numerous agencies, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr Platt is on the editorial boards of 6 medical journals, including the AIUM's Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine.

Dr Platt served as president of the AIUM from 1999 to 2001 and the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology from 2002 to 2004. He was chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for 11 years and remains a professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the David Geffen School of Medicine. He also maintains a private practice in maternal-fetal medicine and women's ultrasound in Los Angeles.

Basic science awardee Ernest Feleppa, MD, has been the recipient of 14 public health service grants, including 8 research grants from the NIH. He was principal investigator of 7 and coprincipal investigator of 1. His biomedical research has yielded 3 patents, and he has published more than 100 scientific papers.

Dr Feleppa occupied several research positions at Riverside Research Institute before assuming his current role. In addition, he is an adjunct associate professor at Pace University, adjunct associate professor of surgery at New York Medical College, adjunct research associate professor of surgery at Drexel University, and adjunct professor of biomedical engineering at Columbia University.

The award's namesake, Joseph H. Holmes, was an important figure to both the field of diagnostic ultrasound and the AIUM. His early efforts in ultrasound research helped advance the field of ultrasound and encourage others to conduct new research.
