Montville resident and NJIT professor receives engineering honors

Grant and Award Announcement

New Jersey Institute of Technology

Nirwan Ansari, of Montville, a professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering at NJIT, has received two notable honors. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has named him a Fellow for his contributions to broadband networks and communications.

Ansari also received an award from the IEEE member and geographic activities board. The honor recognizes Ansari's sustained leadership and tireless efforts to increase and maintain continuous engagement of the IEEE Northern Jersey Section members.

Ansari's research at NJIT focuses on broadband networks and multimedia communications. The National Science Foundation (NSF) supports his work to provide services to a growing set of traffic classes in next generation networks. He is leading an international collaboration between Japan and the U.S. to find advanced security technologies for next generation ubiquitous networks under NSF's Strategic International Cooperative Program with Japan's Science and Technology Agency.

Ansari co-authored Computational Intelligence for Optimization (Springer, 1997) and co-edited Neural Networks in Telecommunications (Springer, 1994). He is a senior technical editor of the flagship publication of the IEEE Communications Society. Ansari is an advisory or editorial board member of the Journal of Communications, Computer Communications, ETRI Journal, Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing, and Journal of Computing and Information Technology. He has co-authored more than 100 refereed journal articles and is the co-inventor of three issued U.S. patents.

Other recent honors include the NJIT Excellence in Teaching Award in Outstanding Professional Development (2008), and IEEE MGA Leadership Award (2008). He is a distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Communications Society. Ansari received his doctorate from Purdue University.
