The Physiological Society of Japan (PSJ) has chosen Springer to publish its official publication The Journal of Physiological Sciences, starting in January 2009 with Volume 59, Number 1. The bimonthly journal was previously published by Society and Medical Tribune Co. Ltd. The journal will join Springer's strong portfolio of physiology journals which includes such publications as Experimental Brain Research and Pflügers Archiv: European Journal of Physiology.

The Journal of Physiological Sciences will be available in print and electronically on Springer's online platform www.springerlink.com. The journal publishes peer-reviewed original papers, reviews, short communications, technical notes and letters to the editor, based on the principles and theories of modern physiology. All fields of physiology are covered, encompassing molecular, cellular and systems physiology, and although the emphasis is on human and vertebrate physiology, comparative papers are also included.

Dr. Yasuo Sakuma, head of the Department of Physiology at the Nippon Medical School in Tokyo and Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Physiological Sciences, said, "In the post-genome era, increasing interest is being devoted to phenotypic expression and the function of the organism. As a result, the body of new knowledge about physiology, which can be ultimately applied to improving human health, is growing rapidly. The Journal of Physiological Sciences provides a forum for diversified research being done in physiology in its widest context. We have full confidence in Springer's publishing expertise to enhance the journal's profile and availability."

Dr. Dieter Czeschlik, Editorial Director for Life Sciences at Springer, said, "I am very proud to welcome The Journal of Physiological Sciences to our program. This journal perfectly matches Springer's large program in physiology, and in working together with The Physiological Society of Japan, we look forward to strengthening the journal's reputation as an essential source of knowledge for physiologists."
