Awards to be presented at 47th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit

December 15, 2008 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is pleased to announce that the following awards will be presented during the 47th Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, January 5-9, 2009, at the Orlando World Center Marriott in Orlando. The recipients will be honored in a public ceremony hosted by AIAA President George Muellner on January 6.

The 2008 J. Leland Atwood Award, co-sponsored by AIAA and The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), will be presented to Awatef Hamed, professor at the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio, for contributions to the academic profession producing excellent engineers not just from the University of Cincinnati but everywhere.

The 2009 Children's Literature Award will be presented to Mary Kay Carson of Cincinnati, Ohio, for her book, "Exploring the Solar System."

The 2009 Excellence in Aerospace Standardization Award will be presented to Paul Gill, program manager, AST at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Ala., for original vision and implementation of an outstanding and innovative technical standards initiative to support NASA's engineering and technical staff, and the aerospace industry.

The 2009 Faculty Advisor Award will be presented to Eric Besnard, professor, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the California State University at Long Beach, Long Beach, Calif., in recognition of a demonstrated passion for aerospace and an outstanding effort encouraging students through hands-on projects and as the faculty advisor for the AIAA student branch at the California State University at Long Beach.

The 2009 Lawrence Sperry Award will be presented to Adam Rasheed, senior aerospace engineer in the Propulsion Systems Laboratory at the GE Global Research Center, Niskayuna, N.Y., for outstanding technical contributions to hypersonics and pulse detonation engines and for innovative research in propulsion.

The 2009 Losey Atmospheric Sciences Award will be presented to Eugene Hill, former chief scientific and technical advisor for environmental icing at the Federal Aviation Administration, Renton, Wash., for the marked advancement of flight safety by leading an international, collaborative effort involving industry, regulatory agencies, and research organizations in aircraft icing research and to establish and implement a new set of certification criteria for flight in icing conditions.

The 2009 Pendray Aerospace Literature Award will be presented to Kenneth Kuo, distinguished professor at The Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pa., for outstanding contributions to the propulsion and combustion literature through textbooks, edited volumes and technical articles.

The 2008 AIAA Foundation Orville and Wilbur Wright Graduate Awards will be presented to the following graduate students participating in research endeavors as a part of their engineering/science graduate studies: Supratik Datta, University of Maryland; Benjamin Jorns, Princeton University; Brian Pomeroy, Purdue University; and Alan Zorn, Sanford University.

The 2009 Willy Z. Sadeh Graduate Student Award in Space Engineering and Space Sciences will be presented to Jeremy Davis, Texas A&M University.

The 2008 Abe M. Zarem Award for Distinguished Achievement will be presented to Joshua Butler of Clarkson University (Aeronautics), and Laurren Kanner, University of Colorado, (Astronautics).

The 2008 Abe M. Zarem Educator Award will be presented to Kenneth Visser, Pottsdam University, and Brian Hynek, the University of Colorado, to recognize their mentorship and guidance of the recipients of the Abe M. Zarem Award for Distinguished Achievement.

The 2008 AIAA Section Awards will be presented to section officers who were selected as first place winners for their work in overall section activities, membership, pre-college outreach, public policy, communications, etc. during the recently-concluded section year.

In addition, the 2009 AIAA Associate Fellows will be honored in a special evening ceremony on January 5.
