Rockville, Md., November 24, 2008 — The U.S. Pharmacopeial (USP) Convention is pleased to announce that it has received an award from the Cooperation on International Traceability in Analytical Chemistry (CITAC) for publishing a Most Interesting/Important Paper on Metrology in Chemistry in 2008.

USP's paper, "The Application of Uncertainty to USP's Compendial Reference Standards Program: Certified Reference Materials," was published as a stimuli article in the Pharmacopeial Forum (November–December 2007), and was authored by Drs. Ronald G. Manning, Steven Lane, Shawn Dressman, Walter W. Hauck, Roger L. Williams, and a subcommittee of USP's Reference Standards Expert Committee. The article discussed the details of USP's emerging Certified Reference Materials (CRM) program, including the important relationship between reference standard uncertainty and monograph method acceptance criteria. CRMs are a new class of reference standard designed to improve the measurement of pharmaceutical products and their ingredients.

"To be recognized by an organization such as CITAC, with its history of promoting greater accuracy and consistency of chemical measurements around the globe, speaks to the innovation and value of USP's CRM program," said William Koch, Ph.D., USP's chief metrology officer. "This award is a reflection of the range of talents at USP that not only contributed to this article, but also made possible the CRM program at USP."
