SNM's Technologist Section (SNMTS) recently announced the selection of 15 nuclear medicine technologists to participate in the second annual SNMTS/IBA Molecular Leadership Academy Oct. 24, 2008, in Orlando, Fla.

"As a professional society, we are dedicated to identifying those in the field who seek to support our profession at the local, regional and national levels. In order to do this, we need to be able to provide these individuals with the resources and tools that will allow them to succeed at the highest level," said SNMTS past-president Scott Holbrook, who spearheaded the academy.

The goal of the leadership academy is to help nuclear medicine technologists (NMTs) gain the leadership skills necessary to excel in the field. The academy offers a weekend of activities structured to teach young professionals fundamental leadership techniques and organizational expertise, including conflict management, stages of team development and decision-making.

For the 2008 academy, SNMTS chapters across the United States identified candidates from their area and encouraged them to apply. A five-member panel reviewed these applications and selected the final 15 NMTs to take part in the training. Criteria for selection included:

  • A notable passion for the profession and desire to become a leader in the nuclear medicine field,
  • A desire to seek the leadership skills necessary to perform successfully in a chapter or national SNMTS leadership position,
  • Active attendance at the SNM Mid-Winter Educational Symposium or Annual Meeting, and
  • Active involvement in an SNM chapter.

The SNMTS/IBA Molecular Leadership Academy is supported by a generous donation from IBA Molecular, whose partnership with SNMTS provided scholarship and travel money for participants. Additional travel funds were provided by Philips.

"IBA Molecular is proud to play an active role in the development of the future leaders of SNMTS," commented Michelle Ernsdorff, vice president of marketing for IBA Molecular. "We commend these attendees for taking on this challenge and are excited that we can help develop their future."
