New book guides readers through the defense acquisition process

Book Announcement

American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics

October 28, 2008 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is pleased to announce the publication of an important new book, Management of Defense Acquisition Projects, by Rene G. Rendon and Keith F. Snider of the Naval Postgraduate School, that thoroughly explains the defense acquisition process and provides the reader with a comprehensive guide to the many disciplines and activities involved.

Written for students and practitioners, the book provides a basic overview of each functional area involved in defense acquisition, including systems engineering, financial management, contract management, test and evaluation, production management, and logistics and sustainment. It also explores acquisition workforce issues, the defense industrial base, and organizational considerations. Each chapter includes learning goals at the beginning, and study questions at the end. Written in a manner to withstand the many Defense Department policy changes often associated with defense acquisition programs, the book can be expected to have a long shelf life and enduring relevance.

Jacques S. Gansler, former Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics, has praised the book, saying, "This is a badly needed textbook on government acquisition. It is an up-to-date and inclusive review of all the critical aspects ... represents an excellent way to get a solid grounding in the complex and challenging acquisition process [and is] a valuable contribution to the long-term objective of improving the government acquisition process."
