The European Union has launched the ICREL (Impact on Clinical Research of European Legislation) a project with the aim to measure and analyse the impact of the European Directive on Clinical Trials (2001/20/EC) in all areas or clinical research. Apart from researchers, this study also has the active participation of the different stakeholders: Commercial Sponsors, Non-Commercial Sponsors, Ethics Committees and Regulating Agencies. Of the five participating organisations, the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona is the only Spanish centre, under the coordination of Dr. Xavier Carné, director of the Unit of Clinical Pharmacology.

ICREL (www.efgcp.be/ICREL) is a project financed by the European Commission through the 7th Framework Programme, an initiative designed for the creation of a European research space and to promote the development of a European economy and society for knowledge. The ICREL project is coordinated by the European Forum for Good Clinical Practice (EFGCP) and has the collaboration of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (HCB), the European Network of infrastructures for Clinical Research (ECRIN), the European Organisation on Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and the Ethics Committee of the Medical University of Vienna.

The members of this project are gathering information from surveys facilitated to all sectors involved in clinical research. The information obtained will permit to adapt current legislation of clinical trials and to know which the most relevant pathways of improvement are. It is previewed that data gathering continues until the 20th of July, and results will be presented in the European Commission (Brussels) on the 2nd of December of 2008.
