AJN honored Clarion, 2 ASHPE and 4 Magnum Opus Awards

New York NY (July 30, 2008) – The American Journal of Nursing (AJN) announced today that it is being honored with a 2008 Clarion Award, two American Society of Healthcare Publications Editors (ASHPE) awards and four Magnum Opus Awards. AJN is the recipient of the Association for Women in Communications' Clarion Award for Magazine Series, Special Section or Group Project, External Publication (circulation between 100,000 and 500,000) for the "Cancer Survivors, Prescription for Living" article in April 2007. The article is an outgrowth from a meeting of nurses, social workers and cancer survivor advocates who convened to address how nurses can better meet the needs of cancer survivors. The article is the first to provide a template that focuses on health promotion for all people who are diagnosed with cancer. It contains evidence-based information and fills a significant gap in the information available to nurses and others who work with these patients, as well as the patients themselves. In its 36th year, the Clarion program honors excellence across all communication disciplines and symbolizes excellence in clear, concise, communications. Winners represent media companies large and small, leading corporations, small businesses, nonprofit associations and institutions. Judges base their selections on substance, style, originality and achievement of objective.

AJN is also being honored with a bronze award for its "Cancer Survivor's Prescription for Living" article and a gold award for the "Good Nurse-Bad Nurse: Is it an error or a crime?" editorial by Dr. Mason from March 2007. The article explored the fine line between nurses who think they are doing the right thing by volunteering to work overtime only to make a deadly mistake that may jeopardize their license and job and risk being convicted of a crime.

The ASHPE Awards program was established to recognize outstanding editorial excellence and achievement in healthcare publications. It offers an opportunity for editors to measure their efforts and publication against the best in the healthcare sector.

AJN has also received four Publications Management Magnum Opus awards. One Silver award was given for Best Public Service Series or Article for "Simple Truth About America's Uninsured" in January 2007 and another for Best Single News Article for "Little Women: The Falling Age of Puberty" in December 2007. A Gold award was given for Best How-To Article for "How to Try This: Predicting Patient Falls," November 2007, part of a series about assessing older adults that was funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation. Another Gold award was given for Best Signed Editorial for "Good Nurse-Bad Nurse," March 2007.

The Magnum Opus Awards recognize excellence not only for entire publications but for the best elements of those publications, from such design elements as illustrations, photography and typography to such content as editorials, CEO letters and essays.

Over the past year, AJN has also been honored the prestigious 2007 Award for Excellence in Health Care Journalism from the Association of Health Care Journalists for a provocative report about violence in nursing. Since 2005, AJN has won at least one Clarion Award each year.
